Putting "Bigs" in Youth's Lives - Nicole B.

Thanks to Sommer's Subaru and Share the Love, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ozaukee creates new, safe, and caring friendships for local youth. People they can depend on, confide in, and just have fun with both in school and outside of school in the community. Big Sister Anna and Little Sister Leila's friendship came at a very vulnerable time in Leila and her parents' lives. Her parents and teachers knew she needed someone that was just for her to help her process her grief, feel good about herself, and have something to look forward to. Anna and Leila met weekly at school where they could talk about their week, work on schoolwork, play games, and just enjoy each other's company. Together they shared their ups and downs, but always made sure they ended with a smile and a laugh. According to Leila's dad, "Anna has turned our daughter from a little girl into someone who is confident, and it's been kind of crazy the transformation she made for Leila. I just feel like that's her person." Leila shared, "Anna helped me feel more confident in myself and she's just really great. I love seeing her every week." Being a friend sounds so simple, but Big Brothers Big Sisters' friendships can be transformative and live long. Anna and Leila is just one example of the power of friendships and mentors. Not only for the youth, but their Big Brother/Sister as well. According to Anna, "I couldn't be more pleased with my match with Leila. Its' been a great relationship for me in my life." Thanks to Sommer's Subaru and Share the Love, we are able to make a difference in over 150 youth each year. Creating and supporting friendships that ignite the power and promise of local youth!

All-In Milwaukee Support - Allison W.

All-In Milwaukee, a local non-profit organization that ensure low-income, students of color graduate from college, has been supported by Sommers Subarus for years! Not only have we been the charity of the "feel the love" holiday event, but we are also the beneficiaries of the 2024 ADAMM Party with a purpose. It has been an honor to partner with Sommers Subaru and ADAMM to grow the support for our program. Today, we have 415 students in our program that we are helping through college and into their careers. Our graduation rates would not be possible without the Subaru and ADAMM support.

Helping Change Lives at St. Marcus School - Cecilia D.

For years, Sommer's Subaru has been a cherished partner of St. Marcus School in the City of Milwaukee. With 3 campus sites on the city's north side, St. Marcus is a high performing, K3-8th grade school that collaborates with the community to do whatever it takes to serve children and their families. Generous support from Sommer's makes an exceptional education possible for St. Marcus scholars. And as the school continues to expand, Sommer's continues to help ensure that scholars have access to the tools, resources, and support they need to grow and excel academically and personally. THANK YOU SOMMER'S SUBARU!

Sommers Subaru is a great Community Partner - Kathleen S.

Sommers Subaru is a great community partner. Sommers works with a variety of community organizations volunteering both their time and providing donations. Sommers has been a great advocate with our Youth apprenticeship program providing training to high school students looking to work in the automotive repair industry. Additionally, Sommers has donated time and money to the Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce, the local school district and Ozaukee Economic Development. They are a great community partner and we appreciate having them such a solid business within Ozaukee County.

Sommer's Subaru Supports Animals in Need Like Tiny Pinecone! - Billy Z.

Pinecone was barely 3 months old when he was hit by a car. He had open wounds from his mouth all the way down to his severely damaged tail, and it was clear that his hind leg was broken. Despite all the trauma to his little body, he was still softly purring and leaning in as we carefully examined him. Our veterinary team cleaned and closed his wounds, soon discovering he was also suffering from a hernia. X-rays revealed that the fracture to his femur was beyond repair and he had lost the ability to move his tail. Pinecone was sedated and underwent a double amputation surgery. Even tail-less on three legs, he's been all purrs at WHS, hopping over for chin scratches from anyone who visits. During the Subaru Loves Pets month this past October, our Ozaukee campus was able to match little Pinecone with a loving family. Our work directly relies on the support of the community, and we can't thank Sommer's Subaru enough for continuing their advocacy for animals when they need us most. A heartfelt thank you to everyone at Sommer's Subaru and their incredible generosity for animals in need!

Sommer's Subaru & LLS Blanket Drop at Ascension Columbia St. Mary's - Megan B.

Our friends at Sommer’s Subaru partnered with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS) to deliver hope and warmth to blood cancer patients, on July 19th. Grant Sommer and John Scudder, representatives from Sommer’s Subaru alongside hospital staff members Shari Forbes and Beth Garbe unpacked Sommer’s Subaru’s generous donation of 80 blankets, 10 patient care kits, and messages of hope for families facing cancer. Also, in attendance was LLS representative, Steven Bloom, and LLS volunteer/Light the Night team captain, Roxanne Carloni. Roxanne is a 20+ year cancer survivor and used to receive treatment at Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s. Roxanne and Steven had the opportunity to chat with local patients and hand out blankets in both the infusion and radiation clinics. This incredible act of generosity was warmly received by hospital staff and cancer patients. Thank you so much Sommer's Subaru staff for providing messages of hope and reminding cancer patients that there’s a big community supporting them along their journey!

Sommer's Subaru Helping Homeless Animals! - Billy Z.

A truly heartfelt thank you to Sommer’s Subaru for their generous support of our work with homeless animals in Ozaukee County. The Wisconsin Humane Society Ozaukee campus continually is receiving animals that are stray, surrendered, and even transported from other shelters in the state or beyond. During the Subaru Loves Pets month this past October, our Ozaukee campus received a little stray dog that had seen better days. “Curly” was matted, thin, limping, and had an ear infection that was bothering him. Our vet staff quickly got to work cleaning him up and addressing his medical needs. After being neutered, microchipped, having nails trimmed, shaved, and receiving medical treatments, Curly was adopted into a loving home only 10 days later. Stories like “Curly’s” are commonplace at WHS, but none of it is possible without the fantastic support of Subaru and everyone in our community!

Sommer's Subaru Gifts the Cancer Patients of Columbia St. Mary's Hospital - Brenda K.

On July 6th members of the Sommer’s Subaru staff visited Columbia St. Mary’s of Ozaukee with arms full of blessings for the oncology patients. Warm fleece blankets may sound like an unusual gift to give in the middle of summer, but cancer patients know better as hours-long chemotherapy infusions tend to give patients the chills. But these blankets are much more than physical warmth – they are a symbol of the comfort in knowing that your community cares about your well-being and is cheering for you throughout your treatment. The Columbia St. Mary’s team welcomed the Subaru representatives, Brooke Sahlstrom of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and volunteers Amanda Baltz and her daughter Madeline. As they have had close friends and family members battle cancer, Madeline and Amanda were so happy to join in this delivering 80 blankets, 30 craft kits and many handwritten notes encouragement from Subaru customers. These gifts will be shared with the patients at both the Ozaukee and Milwaukee campuses. This act of generosity by Sommer’s Subaru is just the most recent as they have partnered with the local LLS staff as part of the Subaru Loves to Care program since 2017. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is grateful to generous local businesses for partnering with cancer care facilities to improve the quality of life of our patients and their families throughout their treatment and survivorship!

Kari's Busy Life! - Carole S.

Subaru’s Share the Love event and Sommer’s Subaru partnership impacts the lives of more than 200 adults with intellectual/developmental disAbilities – people often overlooked by our society. The generous gifts by Subaru and Sommer’s supports opportunities for people with disabilities to lead full and meaningful lives in the community. Portal, inc’s services promote inclusion through engaging experiences, purposeful activities and interaction with others; community involvement and people relations are vital to our mission. Kari is a 35-year old woman, residing with her parents. As Kari gets to know others, she shines with motivation, enthusiasm and inspiration – whether it be creating an art project, volunteering with seniors, or stocking shelves and interacting with customers at her place of employment. Kari participates in Portal’s three core programs: Supported Employment Services, Community and Day Services, and Social/Recreational Services. Additionally, she is active with our Art Education Program (Art Applause) and our Service Leadership Club (Kiwanis Aktion). Through all these activities, Kari leads a full and active life in her community and is becoming more confident with social interactions with both peers and other community members. Using her positive work ethic and organizational skills, Kari stocks shelves and faces products while greeting customers at her part time job at a large retail store. She’s held this job for four years – a gift of dedication to a business where high employee turnover is common. And during the height of the global pandemic, she was considered an “essential employee”. Additionally, Kari volunteers at least four hours per week – donating her time and talents to a local food pantry, clothing drive or senior center. Through Portal’s Social/Recreation Services, Kari enjoys art projects, outdoor nature activities, musicals, festivals and sporting events. Thank you Subaru and Sommer’s for assisting Portal, inc with our important mission: To enhance opportunities for people with disAbilities to participate fully in their community as valued neighbors, productive workers and respected citizens. Thank you for making a difference allowing people with disAbilities to lead full and meaningful lives. In doing so, we are building a stronger community where everyone’s unique gifts are embraced.

Sommer's Subaru Supports Local Homeless Animals! - Billy Z.

We are incredibly grateful for the unwavering support of Sommer's Subaru to homeless animals in Ozaukee County! The Wisconsin Humane Society Ozaukee Campus serves so many animals that come in stray or surrendered that there are countless stories that could be shared. We do our very best to provide excellent love and attention to the animals in our care each and every day and that is made possible by the incredible support of companies like Subaru. One specific cat that was adopted during the Subaru Loves Pets month this year was a little guy named Cucumber. Cucumber came in with a concerning lame back leg and a painful corneal scar. With the attentive help of our vet team and lots of love from our foster volunteers, Cucumber made a full recovery in the caring hands of our staff and volunteers. He is now happy and healthy living with his new family. Stories like Cucumber's are made possible by the outpouring of generosity from the local community and Subaru. Recently we were able to provide a tour to the team at Sommer's and meet a hound dog who was being treated for heartworm. We are thankful for the continued donations as well as the time commitment to build partnerships to better the lives of animals in the community. Thank you Sommer's Subaru for all of your ongoing support!

Thank You Sommer's Subaru! - Heidi W.

Sommer's Subaru helped launch Art & Chalk Fest at the Museum of Wisconsin Art in 2017. They recognized the value in providing this one-of-a-kind celebration of Wisconsin's art and culture free for the community and visitors to the area to take part. It is through their ongoing support that the museum continues to share this festival annually each year, welcoming 20,000+ visitors to the museum campus to explore, learn, and have fun together for free. Visitors of all ages watch the artistic process of painters, sculptors, and chalk artists, talk with artists, chalk the street, check out the art on view in the galleries, listen to music, and come away with a summertime memory that is quickly becoming a beloved tradition. At the Museum of Wisconsin Art, we are passionate about Wisconsin and make it a priority to connect audiences to relevant, accessible, and educational arts experiences produced by the innovative creatives in the state. Community-minded partners like Sommer's Subaru make it possible. So the next time you get into a Sommer's Subaru, driving safely, comfortably, and fashionably to your destination, know that they have a strong sense of social accountability and care about enriching the communities in which we live and work. Thank you Sommer's Subaru for being an inaugural partner of one of the best arts festivals in Wisconsin!

Sommers Subaru Goes Above and Beyond -AGAIN! - Mary H.

Last year I bought a travel trailer thinking that my family, who owns trucks, could all camp together and they could haul the camper. I was driving my dream car, a Subaru Forester. Can't tow a big trailer with a Forester but I was OK with that. Then I started thinking about going on more camping trips. Alone with my dog. I called Omar Soulimani, My sales person over at Sommers Subaru. Long story short, he got me into an Ascent, got my payments right where I needed them to be. I bought it sight unseen because that is how much I trust this dealership. When I went to pick up the car, it was the smoothest delivery I have ever had. Finance was ready, car was prepped and perfect. Omar even named it the White Rabbit, because we were joking about that during the whole process. Such a nice personal touch! I highly recommend Sommers Subaru. They go above and beyond with their customer service and attention to detail. A couple weeks later I met with Charles Cline, the delivery specialist and was very pleased with his attention to detail and the reminders about service and towing. I am over the moon happy with my new Ascent. It is just perfect and I am taking my Ascent and my trailer to Mt Rushmore in June. I couldn't be more thrilled. Many thanks to the team at Sommers Subaru. John Scudder, Omar Soulimani, Luis De Anda, Dereck in the parts department, Charles Cline. I am one Happy Camper!

Creating a Bright Future for Milwaukee Scholars! - Cecilia D.

Through its long-standing, extraordinary support of St. Marcus School in Milwaukee, Sommer’s Subaru helps make the highest quality education accessible to hundreds of City of Milwaukee children. St. Marcus is a five-star, K3-8th grade school serving more than 900 students across two campus locations. Using a proven urban education model, St. Marcus does whatever it takes to serve children and their families. Scholars graduate fully prepared for high school, positioned to excel in higher education, and equipped to be community leaders. Our partnership with Sommer’s ensures that St. Marcus scholars receive the tools, technologies and resources they need to grow and excel spiritually, academically and personally. Support from Sommer’s has also enabled St. Marcus to launch its expansion to a third campus site, set to open in Fall 2021. The Subaru Love Promise in education is alive and thriving at Sommer’s, where our partnership creates a bright future for our scholars and our community!

Sommer's Subaru is "All-In!" - Allison W.

All-In Milwaukee is a college completion program that provides financial aid, advising, program and career support to high potential, limited-income, diverse Milwaukee students to complete college, build meaningful careers and transform the Milwaukee community. Sommer’s Subaru recently presented All-In Milwaukee a check for $67,000 from the 2019 “Share the Love” holiday campaign. This donation is funding the advising, program and career development support of 107 limited-income, students of color from Milwaukee through college this school year. The “Share the Love” holiday campaign is going on now for 2020. We are so proud of the persistence and progress of our scholars during this challenging time. Heading into finals, 92% of the All-In Milwaukee scholars are on track to meet our academic requirements (2.5 or better) and successfully matriculate to the spring 2021 semester. On the contrary, college enrollment has plunged for limited-income students during the pandemic and we expect it to be far worse this fall. In this article, https://www.the74million.org/article/new-data-college-enrollment-for-low-income-high-school-grads-plunged-by-29-during-the-pandemic/, Richard Whitmire describes the cratering of college enrollment rates among 2020 high school graduates as a tragedy whose outline is just becoming visible. That picture grew clearer and more distressing today with the release of new data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center showing college enrollment declined for limited-income students at nearly double the rate of higher-income students – 29.2% vs 16.9%. The decrease for all 2020 high school grads, measured for the first time since COVID-19 wreaked havoc on the nation’s schools, is also alarming: a nearly 22 percent drop this year versus a 2.8 percent drop for the class of 2019. The crucial difference, Whitmire writes, is that those from more affluent and middle-class backgrounds will likely make their way back to college once the pandemic subsides, while the trajectory for limited-income students may have changed forever. Yet, All-In Milwaukee is defying the odds with our aid and support. With the generous support of partners like Sommer's Subaru we will ensure limited-income, students of color from Milwaukee complete college, build careers, and transform Milwaukee.

Sommer's Subaru Supports Homeless Animals! - Billy Z.

The Wisconsin Humane Society was grateful to receive the generous support of Sommer’s Subaru through Subaru Loves Pets, as well as National Make a Dog’s Day. Their support provided much-needed toys and supplies to animals in need in our community. Additionally, the generous funding from National Make a Dog’s Day will be put to good use caring for animals in need, like T-Rex. He came to WHS severely emaciated due to an obstruction in his intestinal tract which required emergency surgery. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our veterinary staff, he went from 30 lbs to 60 lbs while in our care! We simply could not have such an impact on homeless animals without the amazing support of companies like Sommer’s Subaru!

Sommer's Subaru helps Prevent Blindness - Grant S.

We stumbled on to an issue with Grant Sommer’s daughter, Lizzy Sommer, who was diagnosed with bilateral astigmatism, hypermetropia, suppression of binocular vision and refractive amblyopia. Prevent Blindness, an organization that goes from school to school providing complimentary vision screenings thankfully caught all of these issues with Lizzy before any damage was done. Left untreated in a child, these symptoms can lead to permanent eye damage and blindness. Unknown to many people including us, vision screenings are not completed during normal check-ups for children at their primary doctors. So, we teamed up with Prevent Blindness, they dedicate their efforts towards making sure vision screenings are done throughout the state to prevent adolescent blindness and vision damage. Lizzy and Sommer’s Subaru were ambassadors for the program, participating in Lizzy’s Walk, and speaking at events throughout the community about making sure our children are vision screened. We also met with the Prevent Blindness volunteer vision screeners and spread the word on the impact that a vision screener can have to hopefully encourage more volunteers to become a vision screener. It was a successful annual effort that raised money and awareness for Prevent Blindness in Wisconsin. It is an organization for all social groups, and has no boundaries on where their services are needed. Sommer’s Subaru was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Prevent Blindness, an organization that does so much, for something that people know so little about.

Sommer's Subaru delivers Hope to Cancer Patients - Karen R.

Sommer’s Subaru and the Wisconsin Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society delivered 80 blankets to Ascension Columbia St Mary's Hospital Ozaukee on Tuesday, July 22, 2019 as part of the Subaru Loves To Care program. These comforting gifts were accompanied by personalized messages of hope written by the customers and staff of Sommer’s Subaru. This delivery was particularly meaningful for all involved. The Sommer family has a long history of generosity with the hospital, the hospital staff is highly engaged with the Wisconsin Chapter and two LLS staff members have purchased Subaru vehicles from Sommer’s Subaru. This incredible act of generosity was warmly received by the Ascension staff and we were able to visit one patient while at the hospital. LLS is proud to partner with Subaru to spread hope, love and warmth to those fighting cancer, across the country and right here in Wisconsin.

Successful Students Make Successful Employees! - Marlene M.

Portal, inc works with local school districts improving community employment outcomes for high school students with intellectual/developmental disabilities transitioning from school to adult life. Statewide, only 16% of youth/young adults (ages 18-24) graduate from high school with paid job experience. Yet, for individuals with disabilities, having at least one job while in high school is shown to double the chance of obtaining paid employment as an adult. Thanks to Subaru's Share the Love Event and our partnership with Sommer's Subaru, we initiated the "Community Connections/Employment Skills" program - providing community- and employment-based experiences while teaching soft skills employers look for when hiring, and also helping students network with community members and business personnel. In addition, students attend the Self-Determination Conference held annually in the Wisconsin Dells. Having a job within six months following high school graduation is the ultimate goal for each person participating. On behalf of all of us at Portal, inc, including the 14 individuals involved in the new employment-focused program, thank you for sharing in our success for the future! Jennifer is a community-minded self-advocate who strives for personal success and to be respected in her community. Last year, Jennifer educated herself about the voting process and petitioned the Ozaukee County court system to reinstate her voting rights. Today, Jennifer works with two employers! She has a job with an employer in Port Washington, doing clerical work, and a Mequon based employer doing production packaging. She is valued and appreciated by both employers. A member of People First, Jennifer is a role model for other self-advocates. She is also a member of the Kiwanis Aktion Club giving back "in-service" to others in her community. All of these opportunities, the "Community Connections and Employment Skills" program, as well as the three-day self-determination conference have supported Jen to be the responsible adult that she is today, regardless of her disability. Many thanks to Subaru for making a difference!

Investing in the Future! - Nicole B.

The 2016 Share the Love Event made an investment in the future of children facing adversity in Ozaukee County. Their generous contribution supports one-on-one mentoring relationships built on friendship and trust that blossoms into a world of unlimited potential. According to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ozaukee's (BBBSOZ) Executive Director, Nicole Bulow, "Subaru’s investment in programs for children who need it the most is an inspiring example of corporate philanthropy at its best. We know that children who are paired with Big Brothers/Sisters show remarkable improvements in their personal and academic lives. We applaud Sommer’s Subaru, Subaru of America, and their customers for their focus on the future…our children.” Each year BBBSOZ provides mentoring to over 150 children in Ozaukee County, just like Little Brother Nathaniel. Nathaniel was matched with Dwight in 2011. Dwight shared his passion for his faith, introduced Nathaniel to new people and activities, and has taught Nathaniel the value of helping others and giving back to the community. Dwight also assisted Nathaniel with preparing for and finding his first job and exploring future career options. With the support of his mother and Dwight’s extra guidance, Nathaniel graduated from High School in 2017 and is pursuing his interest in auto mechanics. By supporting one child, one mentor, and one friendship at a time, Subaru’s invests in brighter futures, better schools, and stronger communities throughout our county.

American Cancer Society Bark For Life Fundraiser - American Cancer Society B.

The American Cancer Society Bark For Life is a fundraising event honoring the lifelong contributions of our Canine Caregivers. It presents an opportunity for people to be empowered through their canine companion partnerships and to contribute to cancer cures through the mission of the American Cancer Society.
